Mindset, mindfulness, what’s the difference? And why do I care?
We hear these terms thrown around alot but what are we talking about and why does it matter and why does my Coach or gym care?
Ok, let me ask you this..
Do you have 15 tabs open on your computer? Ever go to write an email but then end up clicking on 3 other tabs or answering a text. Yeah, me too. Ever get to the gym but when the coach starts talking you zone out thinking about your to do list when you leave.. Yep.
This is what we are referring to when we talk about Mindfulness. It’s funny actually, the word it’s self the the opposite of it’s intention. Instead of your mind being full we are aiming for it to be still and less cluttered.
As Colm O’reilly describes, Mindfulness is being fully aware, present and deliberate in our thoughts, words and actions. It requires deliberate practice and for most of us it’s simply remembering to bring our attention back to whatever we’re doing in the moment.
You could imagine how this might help ease our stress and our anxiety. Right?
Mindset refers to our attitude towards ourself, our life and our challenges (ever face any challenges at the gym? ) It does not mean we walk around thinking everything is sunshine and rainbows and everything is perfect all the time. Instead it’s more of an assurance or faith that we’ll be okay regardless of what happens, that our worth isn’t dependent on the outcome. A healthy mindset allows us to be okay with our nerves/anxiety as we step outside our comfort zone.
For example, it’s coming into the gym and giving our best for today and letting go of comparison of yesterdays, or neighbors, it’s not beating ourself up if we didnt (fill in the blank) it’s not giving up when we want to.
Mental Health we’ll define here as the totality of our thoughts and our emotions. By developing mindfulness, we become aware of our mindset and can then choose to consciously work on it, which improves our overall health and well being.
Why is this important?
How we feel about ourselves and how we make sense of the world contributes massively to how we behave, our life satisfaction and our health.
As coaches we’ve all seen people lose weight, achieve amazing improvements in their strength and conditioning, yet still remain unhappy. Or we’ve known people to crush it in the gym but try to get by on 4 hours sleep and chug a 6 pack at night. Maybe you come to they gym but you complain the whole time and never see progress. Mindset can help us here.
As Coaches and a Wellness Collaborative we want you be healthy both physically and mentally as I would aim to say it’s truly hard to be one without the others as they are two bound together.
When we think about begging healthy we must not just look at the physical component but the pillars that make up health which we believe are movement (what we do in here), nutrition, sleep and Mindset. When we have one but not the others we are not fully optimized.
Mindset is a key pillar of health along with our movement, nutrition, and sleep. Some people improve their mood and mindset indirectly through exercise, yet the vast majority of us can supercharge our health by deliberately working on mindset as part of our healthy habits.
Ok maybe I’ve convinced of the WHY – now comes the How?
