Athlete of the MonthJuly

Phil Gurule

This month we chose 2 members that serve our communities everyday with their jobs. We're so thankful for the work you do!

Tell us a little about yourself?

I am a Colorado native from Pueblo. I graduated high school in 2005 and the graduated with a bachelors in criminology from UCCS. I got hired with Denver Police in 2015 and still currently with them. I love what I do and knowing that at the end of the day I did something positive for someone.

How and when did you get started with CrossFit?

I moved to Portland Oregon 2013 to become a police officer. My brother lived there and introduced me to CrossFit. I fell in love with it the first day I tried.

What recreational activities/hobbies to you do/have?

On my free time if I’m not at CrossFit I’m spending time with my amazing fiancé Julia. We go camping ,biking, swimming and spend time with friends and family. I love mountain biking. I love trail riding but my favorite riding is downhill and kicking up dirt at the bike parks around the state. Nothing beats hitting drops and flying off jumps with speed, all adrenaline.

What is your favorite cheat meal?

My favorite cheat meal is hot wings ,fried pickles and beer.

What is your favorite thing about CrossFit?

I love CrossFit for the fact it challenges your body and shows you what you really can achieve, your body is stronger than the mind. I really love Spartan history and feel like CrossFit is the closest modern day fitness that comes close to Spartan training. My favorite movement is a hard one to choose from. For the bar I would say the snatch only because I have came a long way weight and technique wise. It took me a long time to get just the technique down. My favor WOD is def MURPH, just feel like a bad as after finishing. CrossFit community is like no other. People from all backgrounds come together for a common goal side by side feeling the pain and success together.

What kind of positive affect has CrossFit had on you and your life?

CrossFit has had a huge positive affect in my life . In my line of work your fitness level can literally determine life or death. When I get in a fight with a suspect it’s a fight for my life because people will and can do anything to keep their freedom, even when they don’t deserve it anymore. CrossFit has made me a stronger person physically and mentally. It has had a major influence on My life since day 1 and continues everyday. CrossFit Vantage is by far the best Box I have been apart of and would recommend it over any box ! Coaching and gym is top notch.
