Holiday Priorities

Well, the table is covered in Halloween candy and we’ve set the clocks back.  That means that the holiday season is upon us.  That final stretch of the year, time for Food and Festivities, Family and Football, Decorations and Depression, Stress and Sweets.  Yes, from Halloween to New Years is both the Best and Worst time of the year.

I really do enjoy the holiday season.  The lights, the music, the general atmosphere, but I’m not immune to their dark side.  I’ve witnessed joyous occasions just as often as I’ve witnessed emotional ones around the holidays.  Baby’s First Christmas, Holiday Parties, people missing loved ones, layoffs from work, traveling,  more Holiday Parties. Seeing your family, or your spouses family, the optioned father in law the intoxicated aunt.  The end of the year can be a very stressful and very special time of year.

With everything going on, many of us end up sacrificing ourselves for those around us.  We put our lives, habits, routines on hold in order to serve others.  After having done this myself for years, I’m going to tell you, it’s OK to put yourself at the top of your priority list.

I can’t recall how many times I’ve talked with people about surviving the holidays, but it’s in the triple digits I’m sure.  Each year, I hear members and friends tell me about what they are NOT going to do.  They won’t keep treats in their house. They won’t take the snacks from work.  They WON’T, THEY WON’T THEY WON’T.  Instead of talking about what you won’t do, let’s talk about what you will do this year.

We want you to enjoy the holiday season, not stress out about what you should and shouldn’t be consuming, or what you should and shouldn’t be doing.  We know how hard this time of year can be.  It’s social engagement after social engagement, party ontop of party.  So in order to help you stay on track with your fitness, we want to encourage you to be Social.

Over the next 7 weeks, from now until the new year, I want you to share with us your fitness journey. You choose the method, it could be Facebook or Instagram, SnapChat or Youtube, Email or Carrier Pigeon.  We want to see and hear about you continuing to work towards your goals.  When you come to the gym, grab a picture with your class.  Getting ready to PR your Handstand Push-ups, set your phone to record.  The conference room at the office has excess holiday cookies and you’re trying to avoid it, take a picture and tell us about it.  We know that the holidays can be a very tough time both nutritionally.   We know that being consistent and dedicated in the gym can be a challenge with everything else you need to do.  But this year, don’t let the season control you.  Take control of the season and share with us your victories and your defeats.

I know your Grandma makes the World’s Greatest Pecan Pie, video yourself enjoying it.  Just know that we are planning on seeing you the next day ready to attack the WOD like it tried to steal your last slice of pie.
