“Nobody will hire you if you’re fat.” That was my mother’s way of trying to get me to lose weight. It didn’t work.
I was in my late 40s, overweight, and suffering from back pain so severe I could barely bend down to touch my knees. I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease. I was terrified.
According to the doctor, I had two options: I could do nothing and prepare for back surgery, or I could lose weight, go to the gym, and live pain-free. I knew nothing about how to lose weight and had a strong, negative opinion of gyms. It was one of the hardest decisions of my life, but I knew that if I wanted to be an active grandparent some day, I needed that second option.
I went to my local globo gym, signed up for a “beginner class” and made an appointment with the on-staff nutritionist. I started tracking what I ate, but quickly realized that my back pain meant I needed individual attention — personal training. That decision changed my life.
Fast forward to today. I’m 56 and in the best shape of my life. I’ve lost nearly 70 pounds. I’ve been working out at least three day a week for six years, run a half-marathon, started doing CrossFit (at Vantage!), and have earned my CF-L1. I’ve even almost nailed a handstand pushup!
I have a confidence I’ve never had before, not only in the gym but throughout my life.
I wanted to share this story because … I understand. I know what it’s like to experience chronic pain. I know what it’s like to have to shop at specialty stores because I did not fit into “ordinary” clothing. I know what it’s like to feel so bad about myself that I strongly considered surgery instead of weight loss.
I also understand, first hand, that it’s NEVER TOO LATE. My journey started just before my 50th birthday. It’s never too late to make positive changes that will impact the rest of your life.
It will only get better.
